- The Mid North Coast Guide to Work Safely at Heights Training
On-Site Compliance: Mobile Work Safely at Heights Training for the Mid North Coast In the high-risk industries of construction, telecommunications, and maintenance, safety is not merely a policy—it is a legal and operational mandate. For businesses operating across the Mid North Coast , maintaining a compliant workforce often presents a logistical challenge. Traditional training models frequently result in significant "down-time," as crews are required to travel to distant training centers, halting progress on active projects. SALT Training Academy has developed a streamlined solution to this industry pain point. Through our Mobile Training Unit , we deliver nationally recognised RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights training directly to your worksite or facility, ensuring 100% compliance with zero unnecessary delay. The Importance of RIIWHS204E Certification Falls from heights remain one of the primary causes of serious injury and fatality in the Australian workplace. Under the NSW Work Health and Safety Act 2011 , employers (PCBUs) are required to provide adequate training and equipment to any worker at risk of a fall. The RIIWHS204E unit is the industry standard, providing workers with the essential skills to: Correctly identify work requirements and potential hazards. Select, inspect, and utilize fall-arrest equipment, including harnesses and energy absorbers. Establish safe access and egress for work at heights. Understand and implement site-specific Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) . The SALT Training Academy Solution: Efficiency Without Compromise At SALT Training Academy, we recognise that for businesses in Port Macquarie, Taree, Kempsey, and Wauchope , efficiency is paramount. Our delivery model is engineered to maximise productivity through a three-step process: 1. Blended Learning Model Participants begin with online pre-course theory. This allows the "classroom" portion of the training to be completed at the learner’s convenience, ensuring that when our trainers arrive, the focus is entirely on practical application and safety mastery. 2. The Mobile Training Unit We eliminate the need for staff travel. Our Mobile Training Unit is fully equipped with the latest height safety technology. We bring the assessment to your location, whether that be a construction site, warehouse, or regional depot. 3. Immediate Compliance Upon successful completion of the practical assessment, students receive same-day certification . This ensures your team is fully cleared to work on-site immediately, avoiding the administrative "limbo" sometimes experienced. Serving the Mid North Coast Region Our reach extends across the entire Mid North Coast . By choosing a local provider like SALT Training Academy , you benefit from a trainer who understands the specific environmental and regulatory landscape of our region. We offer tailored group bookings for: Residential and Commercial Builders Solar Installation Teams Roofing and Maintenance Contractors Industrial and Manufacturing Staff Secure Your Team’s Compliance Today Safety and productivity should not be mutually exclusive. With SALT Training Academy, you can ensure your team is trained to the highest standard without the logistical burden of traditional off-site courses. SALT Training Academy: Bringing 100% compliance to you.
- Don’t Get Fined! The 2026 Guide to UETDRMP018 LVR & CPR Renewal Requirements
In the fast-paced world of electrical contracting on the Mid North Coast , keeping your credentials up to date is more than just a box-ticking exercise—it’s a legal necessity. Whether you’re a sole trader in Port Macquarie or managing a large crew in Kempsey or Taree , staying compliant with SafeWork NSW and the latest national units is critical for both safety and your bottom line. As of 2026, the industry has seen significant shifts in training standards. If you haven't checked your certificate lately, you might be training for a unit that has been superseded. Here is everything the local electrical industry needs to know about the new LVR and CPR requirements. The New Standard: UETDRMP018 For years, UETDRMP007 was the unit code every sparky knew by heart. However, in line with modern workplace health and safety (WHS) expectations, UETDRMP018 (Perform rescue from a live low voltage panel) has officially taken over. While the core goal remains the same—saving a life during an arc flash or electrocution incident—the new unit places a much heavier emphasis on: Enhanced Risk Assessment: More rigorous site-specific hazard identification. Updated PPE Protocols: Ensuring rescue kits and personal protective equipment meet 2026 Australian Standards. Mandatory Prerequisites: You cannot be issued a Statement of Attainment for LVR without a current HLTAID009 (Provide CPR) certificate. Who Needs LVR and CPR Training? Many businesses mistakenly believe only the person "on the tools" needs the qualification. Under the SafeWork NSW Managing Electrical Risks in the Workplace Code of Practice , the requirements are broader. 1. Licensed Electricians and Apprentices If you are working on or near live low-voltage equipment (up to 1000V AC or 1500V DC), you must be competent in rescue and resuscitation. 2. Safety Observers (Spotters) This is where many Mid North Coast businesses fall short. According to AS/NZS 4836:2023 , a safety observer is mandatory for most live work. That observer must hold a current LVR and CPR qualification. If your apprentice is acting as your spotter but hasn't refreshed their CPR in 14 months, you are in breach of safety regulations. 3. ASP Level 2 Providers For those working on the Essential Energy network across the Mid North Coast, annual regulatory training is a non-negotiable requirement for maintaining your authorisation. How Often is LVR Training Required? This is the most common question we get from Port Macquarie tradies. While some First Aid certificates last three years, the electrical industry operates on a much tighter loop. CPR (HLTAID009): The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and SafeWork NSW recommend renewal every 12 months . LVR (UETDRMP018): Most network providers (like Essential Energy) and Tier 1 construction sites require an annual refresher . In 2026, insurance companies are increasingly checking the "currency" of these certificates during claims. If an incident occurs and your LVR/CPR is 13 months old, your Public Liability insurance may be at risk. Why Train Locally in Port Macquarie? Sending your team to Sydney or Newcastle for training isn't just a logistical nightmare—it’s an unnecessary expense. Onsite Training for Businesses: For local contractors, onsite group training is the gold standard. Instead of losing five sparkies for a whole day as they travel to a training center, SALT Training Academy can come to you. This allows your team to train with their actual LVR kits, ensuring that if a real emergency happens, they aren't fumbling with unfamiliar gear. What Happens if You Aren't Compliant? SafeWork NSW has significantly increased penalty units for the 2025-2026 financial year. A failure to provide a safe system of work—which includes having trained rescue personnel on-site—can lead to: Heavy Fines: Penalties for PCBUs (Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking) can reach into the hundreds of thousands for serious breaches. Work Stopages: Principal contractors on Mid North Coast projects are now using digital inductions that automatically "red-flag" workers with expired LVR/CPR competencies. Licensing Issues: The NSW Fair Trading department can audit your training records during license renewal or after a reported electrical incident. Checklist: Is Your Business Ready? Check the Dates: Do all staff have a CPR certificate issued within the last 12 months? Verify the Code: Does your LVR certificate list the current UETDRMP018 unit? Inspect the Kits: Are your Low Voltage Rescue kits in-date and inspected? Local Booking: Is your next refresher booked with SALT Training Academy the only Port Macquarie provider to avoid the "expired ticket" rush? Compliance doesn't have to be a headache. By staying on top of the annual UETDRMP018 and HLTAID009 LVR & CPR certification requirements, you protect your workers, your license, and your business reputation on the Mid North Coast. Book your LVR CPR Course today!
- Australia’s 5 Most Venomous Ocean Creatures — Would YOU Know What To Do?
Australia’s 5 Most Venomous Ocean Creatures — Would YOU Know What To Do? Living in Port Macquarie , we’re lucky to have some of Australia’s most stunning coastline—but with that comes the occasional brush with our region’s more dangerous marine life. Would you know what to do if you came face-to-face with one of Australia’s most venomous ocean creatures? Could you recognise the signs of a life-threatening sting? And more importantly… would you know the first aid? In this guide, we break down Australia’s top 5 most venomous ocean creatures , what their stings look like, and the correct first aid to give—based on SALT Trainings comprehensive First Aid Manual . Whether you’re a local, a surf lifesaver, or a regular beachgoer in Port Macquarie, this knowledge could make all the difference. #5 — Stonefish Stonefish are the masters of camouflage—buried in sand, hiding among rocks, and nearly impossible to spot. Many injuries occur simply by stepping on them. Signs & Symptoms (from the Fish Stings/Injury section ): Intense, severe pain Swelling and redness Puncture wounds, sometimes with visible bleeding Weakness, sweating, dizziness Nausea and vomiting In severe cases: difficulty breathing, paralysis, irregular heart rhythms First Aid Get the person out of the water to prevent drowning risk. Call 000 if symptoms are severe. Hot water immersion : Place the affected area in hot water (around 45°C) for 20–30 minutes to help inactivate venom and reduce pain. Do NOT remove barbs or spines —this must be done by medical professionals. Monitor for shock until help arrives. #4 — Blue-Ringed Octopus Tiny, beautiful, and deadly. This animal’s bite can be painless—yet life-threatening due to tetrodotoxin. Signs & Symptoms Numbness, tingling Nausea, vomiting Difficulty breathing → respiratory failure Paralysis Sometimes no pain at the bite site First Aid Ensure safety —move away from the water. Call 000 immediately . Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage (PIB) starting at the bite site and extending up the limb. Immobilise with a splint . Be prepared to start CPR if the person becomes unconscious. Keep the person calm and still. #3 — Cone Snail (Cone Shell) Beautiful shells can be tempting to pick up—but many cone snails deliver venom capable of paralysis. Signs & Symptoms Intense local pain and swelling Numbness or tingling Headache, dizziness Vomiting, abdominal pain Difficulty breathing or speaking Paralysis in severe cases First Aid Move away from the water and danger. Dial 000. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage (as per snakebite technique). Immobilise the limb with a splint. Monitor breathing and responsiveness until paramedics arrive. #2 — Irukandji Jellyfish (Tropical Regions) Tiny—often not even visible—but capable of causing Irukandji Syndrome , which can be life-threatening. Signs & Symptoms (from the Jellyfish Stings section describing Irukandji Jellyfish) Delayed severe pain (5–40 minutes after sting) Muscle pain, back pain Nausea and vomiting Sweating, anxiety High blood pressure, difficulty breathing In severe cases: life-threatening complications First Aid As a tropical jellyfish sting (Box and Irukandji): Call 000 immediately. Douse the sting with vinegar to neutralise unfired nematocysts. Remove tentacles (safe for rescuers). If no vinegar: rinse with seawater , not fresh water. Apply a cold pack . Begin CPR if the person is unresponsive and not breathing. #1 — Box Jellyfish (Tropical Regions) Considered one of the most venomous creatures on earth. Stings can be fatal within minutes . Signs & Symptoms Immediate, excruciating pain Red or purple whip-like welts Difficulty breathing Cardiac arrest Rapid collapse First Aid Call 000 immediately—it’s life-threatening. Flood the sting area with vinegar to stop tentacles from firing. Remove tentacles using gloved hands or a stick. If vinegar unavailable: rinse with seawater . Cold pack for pain . Start CPR immediately if the patient is unconscious and not breathing. - Is Advanced First Aid Worth the Investment for Your Workplace?
HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid Workplace emergencies can happen anywhere — on a construction site, in an office, or out in the community. The actions taken in the first few minutes of an incident are often the difference between life and tragedy. While basic first aid training (HLTAID011) provides essential skills for common injuries, many workplaces require a higher level of preparedness. This is where Advanced First Aid training (HLTAID014) becomes a valuable investment. Beyond the Basics: Why Step Up to Advanced First Aid? Basic first aid is an excellent foundation, teaching critical responses such as CPR, bandaging, and managing minor injuries. However, it does not fully prepare employees for complex, high-risk, or multiple-casualty situations. An Advanced First Aid course equips workers with the ability to handle severe medical events, major trauma, and large-scale emergencies with confidence. For organisations committed to workplace safety and compliance, advanced training moves beyond “ticking a box.” It ensures employees are capable of taking effective, decisive action when professional medical help is still minutes away. Key Skills Gained in Advanced First Aid (HLTAID014) Advanced Patient Assessment & Triage Participants learn how to conduct a detailed secondary survey, including checking vital signs such as pulse, breathing, and consciousness. In large-scale incidents, triage techniques are introduced, teaching participants how to prioritise multiple casualties based on the severity of injuries. Managing Major Trauma Advanced training provides the knowledge to manage life-threatening bleeding with tourniquets and haemostatic dressings, as well as immobilising spinal injuries, stabilising severe fractures, and safely moving casualties. These skills can significantly reduce the risk of further harm before emergency services arrive. Medical Emergencies An Advanced First Aid course extends beyond trauma to cover critical medical events, including: Anaphylaxis: Correct use of an adrenaline auto-injector (EpiPen). Asthma: Safe assistance during severe asthma attacks using spacers and inhalers. Cardiac emergencies and stroke: Recognition of early warning signs and effective communication with Triple Zero (000). Seizures and other medical conditions: Immediate management to reduce risks before professional care is available. Leadership and Incident Management A distinguishing feature of Advanced First Aid training is its focus on leadership. Participants are trained to coordinate the emergency response by managing the scene, delegating tasks, and providing clear handovers to paramedics. This ensures an efficient, structured approach during critical incidents. The Workplace Benefits of Advanced First Aid Increased Confidence and Capability Practical, scenario-based training ensures employees feel confident in applying their skills in high-pressure situations, reducing hesitation and panic. Compliance and Risk Management Investing in HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid demonstrates a strong commitment to workplace health and safety, supporting compliance with WHS obligations and industry regulations. A Culture of Safety and Preparedness Organisations that provide advanced training foster a proactive safety culture. Employees are more aware of risks, more capable of responding effectively, and more likely to look out for each other in an emergency. Is Advanced First Aid Worth It? The answer is yes. For workplaces where serious injuries, medical emergencies, or multiple casualties are possible, Advanced First Aid training is more than a qualification — it is a safeguard. It equips staff with the skills, confidence, and leadership ability to protect lives when every second counts. Investing in HLTAID014 Advanced First Aid is not just about compliance; it is about creating a safer, more resilient workplace where employees are prepared for the unexpected.

- Enhancing Child Safety in 2025: The Imperative of Updated First Aid Training & CHCPRT025 for Educators
In 2025, the safety and wellbeing of children in care is more than a regulatory obligation—it's a frontline responsibility for every educator and support worker. With updated national training requirements, including HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting and CHCPRT025 – Identify and Report Children and Young People at Risk , staying up to date is essential for compliance, capability, and care. At SALT Training Academy , we’re helping childcare professionals across Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Crescent Head, Bonny Hills and the broader Mid North Coast NSW meet these evolving standards through flexible, hands-on training. A safe learning environment for children in classrooms 🩹 First Aid for Childcare: HLTAID012 in 2025 The HLTAID012 course is a nationally recognised unit required for anyone working with children in regulated education and care settings. In 2025, this course has been revised to meet the latest medical guidelines and industry best practice. Key updates include: Refreshed content on asthma and anaphylaxis : Reflecting current ASCIA guidelines, educators are trained on new protocols for managing life-threatening allergic reactions and asthma episodes in young children. Trauma-informed emergency response : The course now includes modules to help educators stay calm, supportive, and effective in high-stress situations. Stronger focus on infection control : Best practices around hygiene, PPE, and minimising cross-contamination during first aid procedures are embedded in training. Blended delivery options : In response to industry demand, HLTAID012 is now widely available via a combination of online learning + face-to-face practicals , making it easier than ever to maintain your qualifications while working. Educators must refresh their CPR (HLTAID009) every 12 months and first aid qualifications every 3 years to remain compliant with ACECQA and SafeWork NSW guidelines. Essential first aid supplies for childcare settings 🛡️ Child Protection: CHCPRT025 – What You Need to Know Equally important is the need to protect children from harm, neglect, or abuse —a responsibility supported by training in CHCPRT025 – Identify and Report Children and Young People at Risk . This unit has now become a mandatory requirement in many education and care settings across New South Wales. CHCPRT025 teaches educators to: Recognise signs of physical, emotional, and psychological harm Understand mandatory reporting obligations under NSW child protection laws Follow appropriate procedures when concerns arise Create safe, inclusive, and supportive environments for children at risk This training is particularly critical for those working in preschools, family day care, OSHC (Outside School Hours Care) , and long day care centres—where early detection and intervention can change a child’s life. By completing CHCPRT025 , educators are not only meeting their legal obligations but also equipping themselves with the confidence to act when it matters most. 🌱 Why Both Units Matter in 2025 In today’s childcare settings, first aid and child protection go hand in hand. Children’s safety isn’t just about being prepared for accidents—it’s also about understanding the signs when something isn’t right and knowing how to intervene. By maintaining up-to-date qualifications in both HLTAID012 and CHCPRT025 , educators ensure they: Remain compliant with ACECQA , NSW Education Standards , and SafeWork NSW Are prepared to handle both physical and emotional emergencies Provide reassurance to families that their children are in safe, capable hands Stay employment-ready and desirable to quality-focused childcare services 📍 Training with SALT on the Mid North Coast At SALT Training Academy , we specialise in delivering nationally recognised first aid and safety training to educators, carers, and businesses throughout the Mid North Coast. - A Day That Changed My Perspective — Lifeguarding at an Adaptive Surfing Event
Riding The Wave of Perspective: Lifeguarding at an Adaptive Surfing Event One day that will stay with me forever was when I was engaged as a professional lifeguard to provide specialised water safety at a surfing event for people living with disabilities . This wasn’t your average beach day. These were athletes—true warriors—ranging from amputees with prosthetics to quadriplegics, all out there giving it absolutely everything they had. I’d been around surf and rescues my whole life, but nothing prepared me for the inspiration and intensity of this day. Watching quadriplegics ride waves with the help of adapted boards and a highly coordinated team was something else. These surfers had to develop breath-holding techniques just to give themselves a chance—knowing that when they got dumped, they’d often be floating face down in the water, waiting for assistance to flip them over and tow them back out for the next wave. And they kept going. Again and again. Fearless. Determined. From a rescue point of view, this was next-level. I had to learn and adapt quickly—how to assist without causing injury, how to work together with the carers and our team as a seamless unit, and how to anticipate the needs of each individual surfer based on their condition and communication style. Every rescue was personal and precise. What I thought would be a challenging day turned into one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. It reminded me that setbacks are just setups for a different kind of greatness. These surfers weren’t defined by what they couldn’t do—they were charging forward, wave after wave - all they needed was people around them who believed in them and who were willing to be prepared for the risk that was involved and be equipped to step in in the inevitable life and death moment. Being prepared turned chaos into confidence. Are you prepared to do what it takes to support your loved ones or yourself to reach full potential?
